Reebok EasyTone, ReeTones, Skechers Shape Ups: OMG! Really?

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now – and this recent email, as simple as it was, pushed me over the edge – and prompted me to “get this done”.

Hi Joey,
What do you think of all these new shoes that are coming out that promise to shape you up just by walking in them, i.e., Reebok ReeTones, Skechers Shape Ups, etc.

So, here is the message that women are “hearing/perceiving”:

“Just wear these sneakers and your legs, butt and thighs will get toned, lifted and sculpted.”

And it raises the question (I’ll repeat it here) I get several times a day (or some variation of it):

“What do you think of all these new shoes that are coming out that promise to shape you up just by walking in them?”

This is what I hear in emails. It’s what I hear from the mom’s on the playground in my neighborhood – and it’s what I hear from the everyday, overly busy woman everywhere.

First and foremost – I must admit, the concept itself is beyond brilliant and the marketing is even more spectacular. I don’t even know if any of these toning sneaker companies come out and say it – but one thing is for sure; Women are certainly under the impression that these sneakers will tone-up their trouble spots just by wearing them. Again – this is great marketing, whether the sneakers actually work or not.

That being said. Here is what I do know…

After spending 7 years studying for a bachelors degree in exercise science and a masters degree in exercise physiology – combined with over 22 years of working with people on improving their bodies – I am confident in declaring there is very little likelihood of the average woman putting on a pair of these kicks, wearing them for 2 months straight – and expecting to have transformed her flabby, saggy trouble spots into tightly-toned, eye catching “hot spots”.

It’s just not going to happen.

Sure – there may be some improvement in posture, balance and/or some lower back ache relief – But, transforming your trouble spots into a bikini ready body??? Ehhh… I’m afraid NOT, ladies…

The truth is, it takes a bit more than lacing up a pair of “toning sneakers” and just carrying on with your day.

And even if there is some “firming and toning” reported by some of the women who’ve been trying them – I can promise that a properly targeted, yet simple, lower-body exercise routine will bring about changes that eclipse any improvements resulting form wearing the sneakers.

As a matter of fact – I’d put my Ultimate Leg, Butt, Hip & Thigh Makeover program up against any brand of “toning” sneaker on the market. I’d even do it on national TV if it could be arranged.

We can find 10 average, out of shape women to volunteer. Split them into two groups of 5. One group wears the “toning sneakers” for 2 months – and the other group does The ULBHTM for 2 months.

I don’t have to tell you how things would turn out – just let common sense tell which group will be looking sexier and ‘feeling’ much better too.

Who knows? Maybe Oprah can arrange ‘The Trouble-Spot Showdown’?

I’m sure all the women who watch the show would be VERY interested in who the undisputed champ would be.

If you want to pass this idea onto the producers of her show – go right ahead, because I’m serious about this. I’d even re-arrange my schedule so I can oversee The ULBHTM group during the 2 month “showdown”.

Thanks for writing an article on this..if this was in fact true, I would have a pair in every color, just kidding. But for a company to be able to get away with making false claims is just irresponsible..yeah I know companies have been doing this for years, but when it comes to working out and eating right and doing it for life and not just for a quick fix..and then someone comes along and says..hey buy these shoes and your butt can look as good as the woman on the commercial..it’s just plain wrong.

I wear the MBT. I didn’t know anything about all that toning until after I purchased these. I thought they were the ugliest shoe around. I purchased these because I walk on a cement floor for over 10 hrs a day. I wanted something for a good give between my foot & the floor.

OMG I bought a pair of these…..I feel terrible and off balance when walking in these not comfie at all. One of my clients got a pair also and insists on wearing them to the gym….please dont squat lunge or walk in these they will destroy your ankles and put you off balance:) they look nice to look at:)Gem

I strongly support joey all these big companies are swindlers they rip the customers by simply hiring the people who are good at selling the dreams by making them appear so real that people fall for it, but if the way Joey suggested if they are so condident then the challenge should be accepted and let’s see the results. Joey we have faith in you and your expertise atleast I’m not buying these pair of sneakers for sure :)

I don’t think so these shoes really work. And if they do so, they might be having some side effects too in 1 way or other in future. Most of the healthy people want to get slim by NOT doing anything and also want to continue their overeating kind of diet. So, majorly these people are targeted by these particular companies. That’s why the tags like “no dieting” ,or “no exercise” or “no sweat” etc, are mentioned.

I’m glad that you put this within your blog, I did write Oprah’s Staff an email after reading this artical because what better way to put something like this kind of a product to a test! :-) Joey, my sister and I are purchasing these sketchers shape-ups but we are the kind of women that do want all of the results via working ourselves hard and eating healthier meals and everything in moderation the normalcy if you will!!!!!!

I actually own several pairs of MBTs and my legs looked fabulous throughout both my pregnancies – I received lots of compliments and languished in the b*tchy looks I received from other (pregnant) women! ; )! However…..I rigorously employed Joey’s ULBHTM and when it got too uncomfortable to exercise, the MBTs only supplemented what I had already started.

MBT and other toning shoes may not do as they say on the label but they do really help to improve your posture when walking. As a trainer i say they have limited potential with regard to toning bums and hips though they can help a bit. A good exercise plan like the ones you set out will definitely get people the results they require, however these shoes really sort out peoples posture and the feeling of ‘off balance’ that is experienced at first is all about activating your core muscles whilst walking. I will say this – make sure you have absolutely no knee or hip problems before contemplating purchasing these shoes because they can really exacerbate any current symtoms

Yes, it’s amazing how marketers can take fake science and turn it into a believable “fact”!
Research has shown that walking in unstable footwear causes the body to use more fat for fuel to manage to stabilize itself and that using that footwear can augment the benefits of certain exercises. But they can also contribute to accidents as well!
The manufacturers of the products are only interested in profit and not truth. They ease their conscience as rip-off artists by referring to the research their claims are based on.
As Joey says, it’d be an eye-opener to do a face off between the shoes and a sensible, proven exercise program.

I don’t know if they will make my legs beautiful (probably not) but I have the Reebok Easytone and they have to be the most comfortable sneakers that I have every worn. I can wear them all day and feel great. Toning or not, they are great shoes. The sketchers look like corrective shoes to me but the Reebok look good too!

I bought the Reeboks and love them, I regulary workout and walk many miles. I find that they improve my posture and help with my balance, and my feet feel great. they are a good supplement to my workouts. A pair of orthotics or walking shoe can cost over 100.00. I found the shape-ups were less comfortable , felt to mushy. But each unto his own.

Welll am I ever glad you posted this article. This must be a sign because i was about to buy the Reebok easytone shoes TOMORROW for my birthday haha. Good thing i read this. It’s unbelievable how the market works and how pursuasive they can be. I mean the second we hear SHAPE UP without major exercice were sold. It’s too bad but it happens. I can’t believe that when were desperate and lazy we will believe anything we want to hear, right. Well I guess i’m just a little shocked since i thought I wouldn’t be one of those people. Good to know though.

I have major foot pain and the sketchers do help with the pain. I wear them when I work out and my feet and my knees have less pain afterwards. They are very comfortable.

I would love to see an Ultimate Showdown between Reebok’s EasyTone, ReeTones or Skechers Shape ups (any toning shoe)and Joey Atlas’ program called Ultimate Leg, Butt, Hip & Thigh Makeover. Take some volunteers and split them into 2 groups – one does the shoes for 2 months – Nothing else!, the other does the ULBHT for 2 months – Nothing else! Then let us see the results and comments from all of the participants. I will gladly volunteer to be in the ULBHT group as I have always wanted to try it and need some help with my legs, hips and butt. ;-}
It would be great to have some truthful information delivered to us – we deserve it!

Well….I agree with Joey but I am guilty of having bought a pair of the Curves brand of these shoes. (they were cheaper). I wear them when I walk at lunchtime @ work-1 1/2 miles a day at a brisk rate. I can feel the soreness in my buns and legs after I walk so they must do something. That being said, I think the walking itself is a better bet! :)

Thank you for this article! I’m working on my MBA and one of my fellow students recently did a business review on one of these shoes, I believe it was the Reebok version. Her research into the shoes showed that the toning results they were quoting in their advertisements that promised x% of improved toning in the butt, and x% of improved toning in the thighs etc. was based on a test of 5 women walking on treadmills for a short distance. One super small study… Anyone who knows anything about a proper research trial or even a basic scientific study could tell you how unrealistic those numbers are. Especially coming from such a large company.

These shoes are great for metatarsal pain. They also work great for knee pain. I feel like I am walking on pillows. Sears has a brand from Dr. Scholl’s. I bought them for $49.00 on sale. They were lighter and since they come in reg and extra wide widths, they fit my foot better (I bought the wide) compared to the Sketchers. I have not tried the Reebok. I am looking for a pair that are all black so I can wear them to work. Dr Scholl’s has them but they are always sold out. I agree, they won’t tone a whole lot but they sure make your body feel better.

I have been walking in my shoes for three weeks now, and I can honestly tell you that my legs and calves are actually toning up I walk for 45 minutes a day at my lunch time and I use to hate walking or running outside, However, once I brought these toning shoes man I can’t stop walking I love the comfort they provide. I can’t wait to get my walk on. I would be the frist to say if they were some crap. If nothing else the’re really great for walking I have a bad back and I feel no pain after walking in these shoes. I only spent 49.99 for them at Sports Authorty there GREAT. But to eashes own.

What does work are the Vibram FifeFingers. I had a ton of muscle imbalance and scar tissue in my lower legs from OCD running a few years back. All sneakers bother me now and actually make me not be able to walk. I started trotting around in the Vibrams and they force you to use muscles in your feet and lower legs that aren’t used because sneakers support your feet TOO much. I have actually been able to start running again after 6 years.

Will Vibrams give you an ass and legs like the chics on the Reebock commercials? No. But if you have some anatomical or muscular issues anywhere in your body the Vibram FiveFingers can help.

Hi Joey!

I must admit I purchased a pair of Sketchers Shape-Ups but did so not with firming and toning so much in mind but rather to help with my back problems (2 herniated disc’s) and poor posture from years of dealing not only my back issues, but neck injuries from two separate car accidents. I tend to walk slightly bent over and tire out quickly. With the Shape-ups, my posture has improved dramatically, I can walk further than I’ve been able to in years and I don’t suffer back pain when walking, unless of course I’m in the middle of a bad flare up to begin with. The shoes have also helped with my balance, which has also suffered greatly due to my injuries.

As for the actual firming/toning of muscles I can’t say I’ve actually noticed a difference although I do feel different muscles being used when walking compared to my regular sneakers. That being said, it is nothing compared to what I feel in my muscles when doing your ULBHTM! Now THAT gives you a work out and I look forward to the day when I can actually complete all the reps! :D

At the end of the day, I would recommend the Shape-Ups for anyone with back or posture problems and even for those who are easily fatigued when walking. I would not however suggest them as a replacement for any of your exercise DVDs. (I have all of them). The shoes have helped me to get moving more, but a pair of shoes is no substitute or easy answer when it comes to getting off the couch and completing a set or sets of exercises consistently in order to improve overall fitness.

Thanks for your mail. Well I did purchase a pair of Reebok Easy Tone sneakers but I didnt rely on the shoes to stay in shape. I workout quite regularly & maintain a very healthy calorie balanced diet but when I did purchase the shoes I was made to believe that by just walking around in them I could get a shapely butt & legs. Somebody ought to take Reebok to task & sue the pants off them. Its so not right! Thanks for your mail, in future we need to be more careful & not fall for marketing gimmicks of any sort.

Hi Joey, I am using our Leg, Butt, Hip & Thigh Makeover and it works for me. It might be true that if the shoes are really comfortable and help you maintain the right posture, that in itself will make exercising a pleasant experience. This will encourage people to work out more and walk more, this is what is going to make the difference, not the shoes.

Actually got a pair of these as a Christmas gift from my daughters. Unlike some of the others here, I have no problems walking in them. They are rather like walking on balance balls and I do find them comfortable. However, I agree that trying to perform squats and such in them would be unwise; they add an element of instability. My podiatrist refers to it as “making walking inefficient.” I noticed that my foot placement when I step became more exact as a result of wearing these shoes, so probably not a bad thing. Still – it won’t replace more focused exercises and losing the extra fat covering all those beautiful muscles. I remember having a pair of wooden Dr. Scholl’s ‘way back that did a great job of shaping my calves when I walked simply because of the way I had to use the muscles of my foot and lower leg when I walked in them. Nice, but biking in terminal morraines and weight-bearing exercises really built up and slimmed down my entire body.

My final opinion: nice as a adjunct, but not a replacement.

I was recently going to a physical therapist for a back problem, and asked him about these shoes. He smiled and said he had two new customers that week because of them. I had ordered a pair before talking to him. The Physical Therapist talked me into returning them and ordering a BOSU instead. I love that thing!!! There are more things I can do with that than a pair of sneakers. Talk a bout a dynamic workout!

I am a RN who stands at a med cart for 8 hours a night. After questioning some of my peers about the Skechers and comfort, I did purchase a pair. There was some soreness in my anterior hip bone region and calves.I attributed this to a more correct posture. As it turned out these are the most comfortable shoes for my profession. It was not the hype of the advertised ‘shape up’ that drew me to these shoes but the testimony of my co-workers comments of “my knees,feet, and back don’t hurt at the end of a shift like they did before” that convinced me to try these shoes. And believe me I have tried every type of nurse’s shoes and other high end sports shoe.

I bought 2 weeks ago the “easytone” and what i like most.. is that reebok is the brand that is more “conservative” about the benefits…like some other brands that promise a lot more… my last sneakers before easytone..was a nike ones.. of $90 usd plus tx and now that I really needed a new pair …. paying $110 wasn´t expensive at all..consider that comes from reebok…
bottom line… if u need to bought i new pair of sneakers… i dont think is bad idea to buy easytone..if u are use to buy “expensives” sneakers..

My experience has been an actual good one… I’ve been running in my MBT’s for three years now. At first it was hard, as in it required extra effort to pick my feet up and extra concentration to run steady and heel to toe. I run 5-6 miles from 6.0 to 8.0 mph 4-5 days a week with my shoes… and I can say that there is a difference in the toning of the calves that really take place. As far as the rest of the legs, your lifting a heavy shoe during your run, so you probably burn a few extra calories because of the extra effort it takes to run. My balance is incredible and yes, I have done Joeys tapes in the shoes. Not easy, and I sweat a bit more, again because of the extra effort it takes to preform the moves without falling over. It’s all about your personal experience, what you expect to get out of them and what kind of effort you put in while wearing them…. They were worth the 250.00 I paid to me, because I know they increased my cardio vascular endurance, took the pressure off my feet during my runs, and toned the heck out of my calves and quads……

Just want to point out, none of the advertisements show a woman sitting still. You still have to work out ladies! I have had a variation of these sneakers in the past and COMBINED with a workout they do seem to work the muscles just a tad more. I feel more sore in more places- In a good way :) Just as I couldnt sit on the couch and watch your workouts, expecting result- Woman cant expect to lace up and just mosey around in toners….You always get out as much as you put in…

I own BOTH Runtones and Shape-ups. Yep, I’ve blown the $$ on them. My workout totals, on average 3-4 miles 4-5days a week on the treadmill with strength building techniques built into the work out. I have Plantar Fasciitis in both feet. I was an advid Nike person for years, but recently tried the Runtones to help eliminate the pain. Plus, they said they work your muscles differently than the plain old shoe. Between stretching and the runtones, my feet felt pretty good. My legs did ache a bit for about a week after switching to them. Now my mother’s foot doctor said the Shape-ups are PERFECT for people with Plantar Fasciitis. I saw them on sale and picked up a pair. Been using them for 4 days now and my feet still feel pretty good. Yes, I’m a bit achy again, guessing because these are a diffrent way of working your muscles than the runtones. Okay, do I have buns of steel because of a shoe miracle? ummmmm, I’m guessing NOT! I had 80lbs of baby weight, thanks to my 1 year old and in the past year, I’ve lost every pound of it. Not because of some shoes, but because I walked (plus kept from overeating). I’m guessing the women that buy these shoes begin to walk more, thinking they will loose the weight. Guess what, you will! from walking. I’m not an expert of any kind, my father owned a fitness center most of my life and my husband is a trainer so I’ve been around alot of fitness – so I’m talking from experience/not professional training here. However, if your feet hurt, I’ve found that both are fabulous shoes for the problem.

I actually have had a pair of FitFlops for 3 years now. While I don’t feel they could do what they claim, I did notice that I did not have back pain when walking for a long time or standing in line (At DisneyWorld) didn’t have my hips killing me.

I have seen the Shape Ups you are talking about and quite honestly, I think they are ugly!!! Even if they were to firm up my butt, they would have to paint my toenails and make me coffee as well..

Im not a fitness expert or anything but I do own a pair of Reebok Traintones which are another form of the Reetones, made just for training. I find that after I work out in them, I feel muscles burning (in a good way) that i have never felt burn before and my feet feel extremely comfortable with no pain. The Reebok Easy Tone shoe line uses balance ball technology which works muscles harder that associate with balance (butt, thighs, and the calves) as these shoes focus on instability.

Also, I don’t think you can expect these shoes to work miracles alone. A healthy diet and exercise has to come into play. I am physically active myself and I have cellulite in the area under my butt and it has decreased ever since i have been using these shoes and that is what they are supposed to do!

The reason why the Reetones may be hurting your feet is because you may be using them the wrong way. The Reetones are just for walking, not running or training. The Traintones are used for anything that you can do in a YMCA center other than running on a track. The Runtones are just made specifically for running. If these shoes are used in a way for what they weren’t made specifically for, then yes your feet will hurt. That is why Reebok has made these different versions.

I don’t believe that you can expect these shoes to tone your body on their own. Like any diet, exercise and healthy eating are key factors to a better body. I think these shoes do work: along with a healthy diet and evercise, ever since I started using them they have reduced my cellulite and I can feel them work muscles in a lot of different areas and I believe that is what they are supposed to do.

The Reebok line of these shoes also I find aren’t ugly and are rather stylish. As for the Sketchers Shape-Ups I have never tried them….the look of them is another story.

And as for you Joey, I understand where your statements are coming from, but I don’t believe you have ever tried them to feel how they work.
